Why is my hair so dry in the winter?

Winter is the toughest time of year for your hair. Because the weather is cold and the air is dry, your hair can feel dull, rough, frizzy, and break more easily. We usually blame the cold weather, but proper hair care can actually help keep your hair looking beautiful during the winter.

Why is hair dry in winter?

The main reason why hair is colder in winter is the cold air, which draws moisture out of the hair and creates static electricity. That’s why you may find that baby hairs are standing on end when you come into the room and take off your hat. We also tend to use a hairdryer more in winter and use heat to dry our hair faster. As a result, the surface of the hair is exposed more than usual and the natural moisture of the hair is no longer retained in the hair. The result is rough, brittle and dull hair. This certainly does not mean that the hair is immediately broken.

When hair is dry, it looks lifeless and rough. The hair is frizzy and full of static electricity, which makes the hair look broken and dull. In this case, we recommend using a mask or hair oil, which will make the shine reflect back from the hair, making the hair shiny again.

Damaged hair, on the other hand, breaks easily and tends to remain chewy when wet. If using a mask or hair oil doesn’t help and your hair still looks dull and lifeless, it’s structural damage, and you should definitely see a hairdresser. In this situation, a proper haircut and Joico’s 4-step care can help.

How to properly care for your hair in winter

Use different shampoos for different seasons

A shampoo that cleanses your hair properly in the summer may be too harsh on your hair in the winter. Instead, use moisturizing and nourishing shampoos in the winter to help restore your hair.

Using a mask too rarely

Conditioner alone cannot moisturize your hair enough in winter. Regular use of a mask once a week helps restore the necessary moisture level to your hair. This keeps the top layer of your hair closed and your hair looks healthier and shinier. After washing with shampoo, squeeze excess water out of your hair with a towel and apply the mask or conditioner to towel-dried hair. This way you won’t dilute the beneficial effects of the product on your hair.

Hot hair dryer without heat protection

Heat evaporates moisture from the hair, which makes your hair brittle and easily breakable. Ideally, you should apply a primary heat protection to clean, towel-dried hair before blow-drying. If you also use straighteners or curling irons, add a dry heat protection spray to your hair before the next heat treatment.

Rubbing your hair with a towel

Too aggressively rubbing your hair with a towel makes your hair more prone to breakage. After washing your hair, gently press your hair with a towel to remove excess water before applying styling products.

Use leave-in products

In the winter, your hair needs extra protection to retain moisture. Choose the right leave-in conditioner that will lock in moisture. Don’t worry about leave-in conditioner weighing your hair down. For fine hair, spray products are better.
